This paper clarifies what “intelligent colouring” in Simulation Decomposition actually means and why it is not a cosmetic detail. The colouring order, base colour assignment, and variable selection directly determine whether interactions remain hidden or become visually obvious.
Using a simple benchmark model, the study shows how ad hoc colouring schemes suppress key insights, while best-practice colouring, starting with the most influential variable and using structured colour gradations, makes nonlinear interactions immediately interpretable. The paper formalizes these best practices and establishes colouring as a methodological component of SimDec rather than a graphical afterthought.
